Growing Together: Inside the NW7Hub Community Allotment

In the face of rising food insecurity, the NW7Hub Foodbank has become a vital support system for over 200 families each week across Mill Hill and surrounding areas. Run by a dedicated team of volunteers, the foodbank ensures that no one in our community goes without. But it’s more than just a place to collect food—it’s a symbol of care, dignity, and resilience.

To help meet growing demand, the NW7Hub Community Allotment was launched in April 2025 with the goal of supplying the foodbank with fresh, seasonal produce. In just three months, thanks to the incredible efforts of our volunteers, the space has been transformed from an empty plot into a flourishing garden. Raised beds are now brimming with courgettes, cucumbers, sweetcorn, pumpkins and leeks, and weekly harvests are already making their way into food parcels—offering recipients nutritious, locally grown options alongside non-perishable staples.

The allotment is more than a growing space—it’s a community hub. Created to support wellbeing, sustainability, and food resilience, it welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a complete beginner, the space offers a chance to learn, connect, and contribute. Composting areas, pollinator-friendly planting, and shared tools make it both productive and environmentally conscious.

The success of the allotment and its contribution to the foodbank has been made possible through the invaluable support of community grants, local businesses and farms, and the Barnet Food Partnership. This borough-wide initiative is dedicated to creating a fairer, more sustainable food system and has played a key role in helping NW72Hub align with the priorities set out in the Barnet Food Plan 2022–2027. Their guidance has strengthened our place within Barnet’s expanding network of community-led food initiatives.
The project also supports the aims of the Barnet Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2021–2025, which focuses on building resilient communities, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and delivering more joined-up local care. By growing food, fostering connection, and supporting those in need, the allotment contributes meaningfully to a healthier, more connected borough.

Looking ahead, NW7Hub is fundraising to expand the allotment with a rainwater harvesting system, more accessible raised beds, and building the shed as an Activities Hut for workshops and rest. The goal is to make the space even more inclusive and impactful.

Together, the foodbank and allotment demonstrate what’s possible when a community comes together to support one another. From planting seeds to packing food parcels, every action contributes to a stronger, healthier, and more connected Mill Hill.
